When i started my natural journey, I refused to use any direct heat on my hair. I was so afraid of heat damage , even when seeing a professional hair stylist apply heat on natura hair. There were just so many horror heat damage stories that I’d heard and seen for myself, I was scared to give it a try. When my friends experienced heat damage, i started researching and reading articles on heat damage and remedies finally compiled this for you.
Here are 3 steps in order to recover from heat damage that you can try as well.
1: Clarify Your Hair to Remove Any Buildup
When you’re shampooing for the first time after having your hair straightened, be sure to use a shampoo, not a co-wash. The goal is to ensure that you remove all product buildup from the hair. It involves cleansing the scalp and cleansing
the hair of old product (clarifying). It is critical to clean the scalp to
rid it of environmental toxins and product build-up.
These toxins and build-up smother the scalp.
Also, blocked hair follicles can cause a host of other scalp related
issues and problems.
Clarifying shampoos or cleansers strip the hair. This striping is
almost to the point that the hair can “sing” or squeak.
2: Up the Protein and Conditioning Treatments
Heat styling can alter the structure of the proteins in the hair, which results in loss of curl integrity and cuticle damage. To restore those proteins in the hair, you will likely need areconstructing treatment.
Protein Conditioners (home made)– Mild protein help to moisturize and add strength to the hair strands.
Healthy hair strands should be pliable and strong. They shouldn’t
be too stretchy ( a sign that you need protein). They also shouldn’t
be too stiff ( a sign that you need moisture).
This is where the moisture-protein balance comes in. If you find
that your hair is more elastic (stretchy) than normal, your strands
may need protein.
Protein Conditioner Recipe
• 2 medium egg whites
• 1/2 cup of plain Yogurt
• Coconut Milk Cream
• 1 cupful of olive oil
Directions: Mix all contents in a bowl. On clean wet or damp hair,
pour mixture over your hair and cover your hair with a plastic cap
for about 15 minutes. Rinse with room temp water, not hot water.
You don’t want to cook the egg whites do you? Deep conditioning is a MUST after a protein treatment. Protein treatments should be done on an as needed basis. Deep conditioning is needed especially after the hair has been stripped using harsh ingredients or after a reconstructing protein treatment.

chunky in your hair.
3: Reassess if you need to trim It
Before you trim your hair and start from scratch, try step 1 and 2 for a few weeks and reassess the condition of your hair. If after repeated treatments, the damage is not improving, you should trim the damaged hair to prevent further damage.
Using direct heat to style your hair can cause damage to the hair if not done properly, and that damage may not be reversible. If you find yourself trying to recover from heat damage, start with these steps in order to get back on track with the health of your hair.
